Jack Daniels is an American distillery of Tennessee whiskey founded by Jack Daniel in 1866 in Lynchburg, Tennessee. The company is owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation Group since 1957. The whiskey bottles are recognizable by their square shape and by the iconic black label.

Jasper Newton Daniel was born between the years 1846 and 1850 in Lynchburg, Tennessee. According to various sources, he was the tenth or the thirteenth child to a mother who died during childbirth. His father abandoned him and his siblings and left them to be brought up by neighbors. By the age of six, Jasper fled his foster home and went to work for a local pastor, who also worked as a distiller. It is said that this is where he learned how to run his whiskey still. According to official company records, Jasper opened his first distillery in 1866.

Why did Mr. Jack name the iconic square bottle №7? One thing is certain: not because the whiskey aged seven years in a casket, nor because seven was his favorite number, as many believe. Perhaps it was the seventh whiskey recipe that was successful. Or the shipment of seven whiskey bottles that were lost and subsequently found with a label that said: “Old №7” (seven more bottles had been sent in the meantime). There are many more speculations, but we may never know the truth because it seems that Jack took that secret to the grave.

It is said that one day after failing to remember the combination to his safe box, Jack kicked the metal box in frustration and injured his one of his toes and soon after he got blood poisoning and the infection spread through his body that eventually led to his death.
